5 Lesser-Known Holiday Destinations To Catch Some Winter Sun

by Douglas Pinter

If you're lucky enough to get a few weeks away during winter you should take the opportunity to remind yourself what proper daylight feels like. If you want a holiday that's a little out of the ordinary there are several destinations that usually get overlooked. The first is El Hierro, a Canary Island that is often passed over in favour of the bigger islands such as Gran Canaria and Tenerife. But with temperatures reaching 22 degrees Celsius even during winter months any holidaymaker would be pleased to end up here.

Bzios is a small town just over a hundred miles from Rio de Janeiro. It's a favourite amongst holidaymakers in South America but relatively unknown to North Americans and Europeans. Perhaps that's part of the appeal, but it would be mean not to let you in the secret. This is definitely a top pick for anyone who needs a winter holiday to warm away the blues.

Another place for winter sunshine is Los Angeles. Many people will never consider holidaying in LA, which is a real shame because the city has some beautiful beaches like Zuma Beach, where you can spot whales in winter. The Hollywood Walk of Fame is one of many of the city's must-see sights and if you're lucky enough you might even bump into a real life A-Lister.

For somewhere a bit closer to home opt for Sicily. Like Italy only warmer and with more daylight hours, you'll be able to complement increased sun exposure with delightful Italian cuisine and wine. Temperatures here reach about 17 degrees, so while it's not exactly bikini weather it does provide sunshine that you just won't get in Britain.

The final pick is Buenos Aires, the Argentinian capital. Like Bzios, Buenos Aires enjoys its summer while Britain is in winter, meaning that temperatures can reach 30 degrees. If you're serious about sun seeking then this is definitely the holiday spot for you.
